PROLOGUE
Lynn watched him sleep.
She loved the deep, relaxed expression on his face and the slow, steady rhythm of his heart. She planted a kiss on her hand and placed it on his smooth, muscular chest, over the fading scar, not so angry now. She knew he was at peace.
It hadn’t always been so.
For years, hatred and thoughts of revenge against his father had fueled all of Bud’s actions, both good and bad. He never thought it would change, never thought he would ever act on any other emotions. The sudden death of his mother had killed whatever lingering trust the boy had had. The brutality of his father had haunted him his entire life and it had somehow become a shameful secret her never thought to share with anyone.
No one had been more surprised than Bud when, very early in their relationship, he had actually told Lynn what happened all those years ago. He had physically felt the heavy stone beginning to lift from his heart. He had clammed up after that, but from that moment he realized he had fallen instantly and deeply in love with Lynn Margaret Bracken. That scared him most of all.
It was from that time on that Bud began to actively abhor the violent part of him that had so dominated his life. He set about to consciously vanquish the specter of his father. Now that he was with Lynn, experiencing some happiness for the first time in his life, he felt he might start to succeed.
And then came that awful night when the ghost not only reclaimed him, it nearly destroyed him…
After that, it had taken Lynn almost two years to help him see that he wasn’t like his father, would never be like his father. Fortunately she wasn’t alone in her efforts. Ed Exley had helped, too. Ed, who had once been Bud’s nemesis more than redeemed himself by asking Bud one simple question: would Wendell Sr. have done what Bud did that night at the Victory Hotel? Would he have risked his own life to save another as Bud had done for him? It was impossible, he had insisted, that Bud could ever be like that piece of shit that just happened to sire him. Bud started to believe him. He began telling Ed things he could never share with Lynn. The tightly sealed cork on his soul began to loosen, letting the real pain out. The only thing Lynn could do was hold him and try to comfort him when he woke up, panting and crying from the dreams. Eventually it began to get better. He would never be completely healed, but he had finally begun to face the demons down.
CHAPTER ONE
She stretched contentedly against her pillows and turned to look at her husband sleeping beside her. Even after three years together and almost two years of marriage, the sight of him still made her heart quicken and fill with feelings so intense, they shook her to the core. She propped her head on her hand and let the other stroke his face, lightly tracing his jaw, running over stubble and teasing the cleft in his chin. Still lazy with sleep, she moved closer to his neck and moved further down to lick at both of his nipples. Her hand moved down his body over his broad chest and hard stomach, down to his cock which was already semi-erect. She could feel it twitch as she stroked him and cupped his balls in her hand. A low moan escaped Bud as he opened his eyes and looked lovingly at her.
“Good morning, honey,” she said.
“Looks like it will be,” he answered, drawing her into his arms. He kissed her, soft and slow, his lips brushing over hers, pausing to nip gently at them. She opened her mouth to him letting their tongues push and probe at each other as Bud’s hands wandered over her body. He loved the feel of her in the morning, all soft and yielding. He took her nipples between his fingers, one at a time, twisting them gently in the way he knew she loved. He could hear her moaning with pleasure as he gently flicked at them with his tongue, first one, then the other, teasing them into hard points as he pulled them between his lips. She arched her back and pressed against him, stroking his cock harder. His fingers entered her, finding her wet and ready, making her moan into his mouth. He rolled on top of her as she wrapped her legs around him and entered her slowly with a deep groan of pleasure.
“You’ll be late,” she murmured in his ear.
“Yeah. Very late.”

While he showered and shaved, Lynn made the bed and put up a cup of coffee. She was in the kitchen when the feeling hit her. A slight wave of nausea and dizziness that made her grasp the sink for a minute. She cleared her head and splashed some cold water on her face before walking back to the bedroom. She was laying out his cloths when Bud came in, wrapped in a towel, catching the sudden pre-occupation on her face.
“What’s the matter, doll?”
“Nothing, what could be the matter?” she said, trying to keep her voice neutral. She helped him on with his shirt, buttoning it for him.
“You look so pale all of a sudden,” he said with concern, cupping her head in his hand so he could see her face.
“I’m just a little tired and I have a lot of work to do, today. One of the girls is on vacation.” She started to pull away; Bud held on to her and kissed her throat.
“I don’t want to go,” he said, in a mock whining tone.
“Yes, you do. Now, hurry up!” She pushed him to sitting on the bed and playfully threw a pair of socks at him. He put on his pants and finished dressing. Lynn was fixing his tie for him, concentrating on tightening the knot when he noticed the far away look in her eyes.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” She had turned to put something in one of the drawers and didn’t hear him.
“Lynn?”
“Bud, I’m fine, really. And you’re late! Now go, will you?” He gave her a slightly worried smile as she hustled him to the front door, stopping to share a quick, final kiss.
“I’ll call you later, how about El Cholo’s tonight?”
The thought of food, any kind of food made her stomach turn but she said, “Okay, have fun. I know you will.”

Lynn rushed about getting dressed. Just as she was leaving the phone rang and she ran to answer it. She recognized the voice on the other end immediately.
“Lynn? Bill Conroy, here.”
“Yes, doctor?”
“I won’t keep you in suspense. Congratulations, the world is less one rabbit, you’re pregnant.”
Her breath left her. She heard him cautioning about making an appointment but all she could do was to hold the phone, thinking of the baby she had so hoped for, growing inside her.
Hanging up the phone, she sat down on the bed, staring at herself in the mirror, going back and forth between joy and consternation. How would Bud take the news?
He had come a long way. He’d worked hard to open up to her and put the past behind him but he would always be a work in progress. She watched his struggles, understood and accepted them, and loved him even more for them as she knew he loved her. But was he ready for this?
